In 2026, Janet Clarke Hall will celebrate an extraordinary milestone: 140 years since its founding as Australia’s first residential college for women and one of the oldest such institutions in the world.
For 140 years, the College has been defined by courage, philanthropy, academic excellence, and the unwavering belief that talented young people, regardless of background, deserve equal access to a world-class education within an intentional and supportive residential community.
As we prepare for this landmark anniversary, 2026 will be a year of celebration, reflection, and storytelling. We will share the humorous, heartfelt and deeply human memories that have shaped the character of the College. These are stories that remind us that while much has evolved, the essence of JCH remains constant: a close-knit home where friendships are formed, confidence is built, and lives are transformed.
At the same time, we look boldly to the future. Guided by our 2024–2029 Strategic Plan, the College is working toward a transformational goal: to become Australia’s first need-blind College, ensuring every deserving student can join our community regardless of financial circumstance. This vision continues the philanthropic spirit that has shaped Janet Clarke Hall since its earliest days.
In 2026, we invite our alumni, students, families and friends to celebrate with us, to tell us their JCH stories and honour 140 years of opportunity and belonging, and to help build the next chapter of impact.
For alumni Annette Rice (Rodd 1974–1980) and Wayne Rice (1976–1980), the College and the Dining Hall particularly, holds a special place in their story:
“In December 1976 we were married at Trinity Chapel followed by our wedding reception in the Dining Hall — a beautiful setting for our families and friends, with the kitchen staff providing a scrumptious lunch. Much to everyone’s amusement were our valiant attempts, eventually successful, to cut through the solid icing of our wedding cake! The cake was beautifully decorated by JCH’s chef and baked by the mother of the bride, who had a few anxious moments. Great memories indeed!”
