Dining and Meals

Sharing meals together is at the heart of College life.

Gathering around the table – life at Janet Clarke Hall

Dining together at Janet Clarke Hall is central to College life. Mealtimes offer space to pause, connect and share stories with friends, tutors and staff. The Dining Hall is where conversations flourish, ideas are shared and lifelong friendships begin.

The Dining Hall experience

The Dining Hall sits at the heart of JCH life – a welcoming space that brings the community together each day. From informal breakfasts and lunches to communal dinners, mealtimes create rhythm and connection within the week.

There’s a well-loved tradition that seats are never “saved” for friends – a quiet custom that keeps the College open and inclusive. It means every meal is a chance to sit beside someone new, to share a conversation, and to discover a connection you might not have made otherwise.

Students and staff gather to reflect, share ideas and enjoy good food prepared with care. Every meal reinforces the sense of belonging that defines JCH, offering an opportunity to reconnect amid the pace of university life.

Some of my best memories are from evenings in the Dining Hall — the laughter, the conversation and the feeling that you truly belong.

Formal dinners and traditions

Formal Dinners are a much-loved tradition at JCH and an important part of the College’s shared rhythm. Held throughout the semester, these evenings bring together students, tutors, staff and alumni to celebrate the academic and cultural life of the College.

Guests wear academic dress, and many dinners feature speakers from diverse fields who share insights and stories that inspire lively conversation long after dessert is served. These occasions blend formality with warmth, honouring JCH’s heritage while creating new memories.

Food and wellbeing

Meals at JCH are thoughtfully prepared to support health, wellbeing and sustainability. The College kitchen team, led by our Head Chef, Huw, takes pride in providing balanced, nourishing meals that cater to a variety of tastes and dietary needs.

Good food sustains not only study but also community — creating space for care, conversation and the simple joy of sharing a meal together.

Students play an active role in shaping the dining experience at JCH. From themed dinners and international food nights to seasonal celebrations, mealtimes reflect the diversity and creativity of the College community.

Students are encouraged to share feedback and ideas for menus and events, building a sense of shared ownership and pride in the food culture of the College.
