Who We Are

A vibrant, values-led residential community, where students live, learn, lead and belong.

A place to live, learn, and belong

Janet Clarke Hall (JCH) is a residential College offering an intentional community and home for students studying at the University of Melbourne, RMIT and Monash Pharmacy (Parkville).

At JCH students are provided the best environment to thrive academically and personally. This environment encourages students to think deeply, engage meaningfully and contribute to a community that values inclusion, curiosity and kindness.

Founded in 1886, JCH remains true to its foundational values of equity, access and excellence, while continually evolving to meet the needs of today’s students.

JCH’s mission is and always will be the provision of transformative experiences through equitable access to tertiary education and College life. In 1886, and for many subsequent decades, this focus was directed toward advancing the education of women. Today, our challenge is to extend these opportunities across all socio-economic groups, while honouring our legacy. Our commitment to achieving need-blind admission by 2035 reflects our belief that a diverse, engaged and talented student body is essential to a rich college experience. This privilege should be based on merit, not means.

Our values

At the heart of JCH are five values that shape how we live, learn and relate to one another. These guide our culture, decisions and daily life as a community.

Community

We create a home where everyone belongs — a community built on respect, care and shared experience.

Courage

We champion courage in thought and action — empowering students to speak honestly, take risks and lead with integrity.

Curiosity

We nurture curiosity as the foundation of learning and discovery — celebrating new ideas and diverse perspectives.

Generosity

We act with kindness and purpose — giving our time, energy and support to enrich the lives of others.

Excellence

We pursue excellence not through competition, but through commitment to growth, learning and contribution.

A diverse community united by shared values and purpose

At Janet Clarke Hall we welcome residents from across Australia and around the world, each bringing their own perspectives, passions and experiences, creating a diverse and authentic community of students, staff, alumni and friends of the College.

Here, students socialise, study, and dine together; they debate ideas over coffee, support one another through challenges and celebrate each other’s successes. JCH creates friendships that extend far beyond College life — grounded in respect, shared experience, and a genuine sense of belonging.

Our residential offering has depth beyond degrees, with opportunities to get involved extending far beyond study. Students can participate in sport, music, art, theatre, and community events and initiatives, shaping their growth and independence, whilst also simply enjoying the rhythm of College life through shared dinners, annual traditions, and fireside conversations.

Opening doors through access and opportunity

With one of the largest scholarship programs of any Australian residential College, JCH financially supports around two-thirds of students, enabling talented young people from all backgrounds to live and learn in our transformational residential community.

Our means-tested scholarships range from $3,500 to $30,000 and may be held alongside University or external awards. We offer scholarships to assist deserving students who are unable to meet the full cost of residence, with scholarships being means-tested and awarded on the basis of merit, potential and demonstrated financial need.

JCH has committed to administering a need-blind admission process by 2035, ensuring financial circumstance is never a barrier to belonging.

Honouring our history | Celebrating our future

For 140 years, JCH has been a place of transformation — shaping leaders, trailblazers and changemakers whose influence extends across Australia and beyond.

Our alumni remain deeply connected to the College, sharing their time, experience and generosity to support the next generation of students.
