The tutorial program
At the heart of the JCH experience is our long-standing tutorial program – small-group learning that complements university study and helps students build confidence and understanding.
Led by academics, graduate students and professionals, tutorials are discussion-based and designed to extend curiosity, sharpen thinking, and foster collaboration. Students are encouraged to question, contribute and connect ideas across disciplines – gaining the skills that set them apart in their studies and future careers.
Please note: Tutorials are provided for students enrolled at the University of Melbourne. Students attending other universities such as RMIT or Monash may have access to alternative forms of academic support.
Academic support and mentoring
Every student at JCH is supported by a strong network of educators, mentors and staff who genuinely care about their progress and wellbeing. The Dean of Academics and Employability, together with the Principal, Deputy Principal and a dedicated team of tutors, provides both academic guidance and pastoral care to help students manage study loads, set goals and plan for the future.
Regular check-ins, informal conversations and structured mentoring sessions ensure that every student feels known, supported and encouraged to succeed -academically, personally and socially.
Study spaces and resources
The College offers a range of beautiful, functional spaces designed for focus and connection. From the quiet of the Library to shared study rooms and common areas, JCH provides flexible access to environments that support productivity and balance.
Students also have access to academic resources, technology and reading collections that complement their university studies. Each space has been designed to support focus and creativity, helping students feel calm, capable and inspired to learn.
Leadership, scholarships and recognition
JCH celebrates academic effort and achievement through a range of scholarships, prizes and leadership opportunities. These awards recognise commitment, growth and contribution both within the classroom and across the College community.
Students are encouraged to develop leadership skills by mentoring others or joining College committees, gaining experience that fosters confidence and purpose well beyond their university years.
Beyond the classroom
Intellectual life at JCH extends far beyond formal study. Students participate in Thursday Forums, Dining Hall discussions, the Midwinter Debate, and the annual Oratory Competition, all of which celebrate critical thinking, communication and creativity.
During SWOTVAC, peer study groups and revision sessions encourage collaboration and mutual support – reinforcing the sense of community that defines College life.
