Sustainability

Living responsibly, learning collectively.

A shared commitment to sustainability

Sustainability at Janet Clarke Hall is grounded in shared responsibility, practical action and a genuine respect for the environment we live and learn in. The College’s approach is thoughtful and evolving – shaped by daily habits, community participation and long-term planning.

In 2025 the College participated in the University of Melbourne Green Impact Program coming 12th out of 360 teams and individual participants – “from small actions such as carrying a reusable mug, to larger actions such as collecting all 10c bottles/cans used within the College and donating the funds to charity, the College’s participation was aimed at making conscious, sustainable choices in so many areas…..Both staff and students made extensive efforts in the areas of sustainability and responsible consumption, including the creation of a College thrift zone whereby all materials are taken to appropriate recycling centres for sorting for reuse/resale/recycling

A thoughtful approach

JCH holds a genuine commitment to environmental care and thoughtful action across its operations and culture. Sustainability informs both long-term planning and everyday practices — from improving energy efficiency and reducing waste to fostering awareness and education throughout the community.

The College participates annually in the University of Melbourne’s Green Impact Program, working alongside other colleges to implement evidence-based improvements. This collaboration reflects JCH’s values of care, consideration and community-minded action.

Sustainable living

Sustainable living is part of everyday life at JCH. Students contribute through simple, mindful practices such as recycling, responsible energy use and reducing waste in shared areas.

These consistent, everyday actions help build a culture of awareness, encouraging students to recognise their individual role in supporting the environment and the wider community.

Site and facilities

The College continues to enhance its facilities with sustainability, comfort and heritage preservation in mind. A range of practical measures support environmental care across the campus, including:

Solar panels and energy-efficient systems
Native gardens that support biodiversity
Rainwater collection systems that significantly reduce water use
Waste-reduction initiatives, including the removal of single-use plastics in the kitchen

Together, these improvements help ensure JCH remains environmentally conscious while honouring the heritage character that defines the College.

Food and dining

Sustainability is also reflected in the dining experience. The kitchen team prioritises responsible practices through seasonal menus, reduced food waste and sourcing local produce where possible.

These choices support a dining program that is balanced, thoughtful and aligned with the College’s broader sustainability goals.

Student initiatives

Each academic year begins with a smoking ceremony, grounding students in an understanding of connection to our Country and the responsibility to care for the land and waterways we share.

Throughout the year, students participate in a variety of sustainability projects including native planting, environmental awareness campaigns, recycling programs and resource-reduction initiatives. These activities reflect JCH’s belief that sustainability is a collective effort: ongoing, collaborative and strengthened by participation.
