Realise a transformational vision to become Australia’s first Need-Blind residential college

Receiving the First in Family scholarship was life-changing for me. It meant that for the first time, I didn’t have to work to support myself – previously I worked 24 hours a week, working evening shifts in a lab to support myself during uni. Upon starting at JCH as a third-year student, I was able to focus entirely on my studies. My grades improved significantly, to around 90-95% in my final year. I was able to achieve my full academic potential as a result of the scholarship. This also opened up a number of other opportunities for me, and I received a university prize for being the top student in Linguistics. I look back on my time in JCH and I am enormously grateful for the scholarship support and opportunities I received. My time there really set off a positive chain reaction in my life, completely changing my life trajectory.

Philanthropy makes all the difference. Because of our intentionally small and close-knit size, we cannot rely on economies of scale. What we can rely on, and what has always set us apart, is the generosity and belief of our alumni and friends who understand that education is one of the quickest ways to disrupt generational poverty, and that a college like ours can play a pivotal role in this ecosystem.
