Why choose JCH?

The academic College with real opportunities for every student

Janet Clarke Hall offers a close and supportive community within the larger framework of the University.  Here you will find, among a hundred others with similar hopes for their degree and future pathway, people who will help you along the way in your studies and life in general.

As a College, we have everything on offer. Our size and energy allow fantastic opportunities for all of our students to try new things, pursue excellence, and lead.

We also have an outstanding tutor team who engage daily in teaching, learning, and mentoring. As a result, our academic performance is incredibly strong.

How do we measure this?

Consistently more than 40% of all of our student grades are First Class Honours, with 90% of all grades at Honours level - significantly above the University average. Alongside this academic success, our students are fully engaged in the social, cultural and sporting life of the College and beyond.

So how do I compare colleges?

Every college has its own culture. Simply put, if you imagine colleges as people, each with their own personality, some you could be life-long friends with, others would merely be acquaintances...

Intelligent and hard-working

They know that University is a cornerstone of their education and the single most important factor in determining their career, life and future. They value knowledge, but wear it lightly; this person is no nerd.

Open minded

They're open-minded and rigorously accepting of new people and ideas. They're courageous enough to speak up when they sense intolerance.

Friendly and accepting

This person is friendly and warm. They value friendship and are not a fan of cliques, gangs or groups that exclude.

Socially minded

They are able to see the big picture and realise that there's more to life than themselves.

Their views on religion, politics and asylum seekers...

That's probably something you should ask them, but the point is...they have views. They are engaged with the world. They don't spend it in a haze of alcohol, drugs, TV watching or shopping. Ideas, discussion and debate make them come alive.

What they don't like

Pettiness, style-over-substance, intolerance, laziness... and pitted olives.

If this sounds like the kind of person you could imagine friends with then come visit and judge for yourself.  We'd be happy to give you a tour of the College anytime, or visit us on our Open Days.

I originally chose Janet Clarke Hall because of its academic reputation. It wasn’t until I arrived that I began to fully understand the true benefits of attending JCH. Our size provides more opportunities for students to get involved than in larger colleges as there are fewer people vying for places. In 6 months, I have been in the rowing crew, joined the choir and been made a fire warden. Participation is highly valued with every student encouraged to either try something new or share their skills with others. It can be very difficult to move and start university away from home but [at JCH] you have made 100 new friends by the end of your first week. There is always someone you know and can talk to when you're stressed about assignments, missing home or wanting the spoilers for the latest Netflix sensation.
