Contribute to the Enduring Legacy of Janet Clarke Hall

Janet Clarke Hall is far more than a place to live; it is a warm and vibrant intentional

community where generations of students have found their place, their people, and their purpose.

As we approach the 140th anniversary of the College’s founding in 1886, we invite you to help shape the future of our College through two vital initiatives that will directly benefit both current and future students - expanding our scholarship program as we work towards our bold ambition of becoming Australia’s first need-blind residential college, and by restoring our beloved Dining Hall, the true heart of our community.

Expanding Scholarship Support for 2026

A scholarship at Janet Clarke Hall has the power to change the course of a young person’s life - supporting them to flourish both academically and holistically. From just 11 scholarship recipients in 2001, the College proudly supported 55 students in 2025 and distributed over $740,000 in financial assistance this year alone.

Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of our community, 57% of our students now receive a means-tested scholarship. Yet demand continues to grow, as more exceptional young people from disadvantaged backgrounds aspire to study at Janet Clarke Hall.

By 2035, we are determined to become Australia’s first need-blind residential college - a place where financial circumstance is never a barrier to opportunity, and every deserving student pays only what they and their families can reasonably afford.

Your contribution can and will change lives

By giving to the Scholarship Fund today, you will help ensure that Janet Clarke Hall remains a place of access and opportunity—welcoming students from all socioeconomic backgrounds and nurturing the brightest minds from across Australia and beyond

Originally from Mauritius, I’ve always wanted to pursue a career in medicine. This dream, however, comes with significant financial challenges. My scholarship at JCH has been instrumental in alleviating these concerns, allowing me to focus wholeheartedly on my studies and personal growth. This means more to me than words can express. It represents not just financial support, but a belief in my potential to succeed. I am deeply grateful for this assistance and hope to pay it forward in the future.

Restoring the Dining Hall - The Heart of Janet Clarke Hall

Our Dining Hall is the heart of college life at Janet Clarke Hall—a space where students gather to nourish their bodies, hearts, and minds. It is a place of connection and belonging, where lifelong friendships are formed, stories are shared, ideas are exchanged, and assumptions are challenged.

Now, after decades of use, this beloved space calls for restoration—so it may continue to serve our community for generations to come.

We are raising funds to upgrade lighting, restore original flooring, install acoustic panels, conserve the Dining Hall’s unique artwork, and refurbish the servery area.

This thoughtful restoration will honour the Dining Hall’s warmth, intimacy, and rich heritage, while ensuring it continues to meet the evolving needs of our current and future students.

Whilst dining at JCH I was able to chat with such varied people as a fighter pilot, an award-winning animator, a university dean, a vice president of a US tech giant, a senior public servant, an oil executive and the parents of an AFL first-round draft pick – we just didn’t know it at the time!  Whether we were discussing geopolitics, advancements in personal computing, or whether sultanas should be put in puddings, the discussion was always lively and memorable

Our Vision for the Future

These initiatives reflect the goals of Janet Clarke Hall’s Strategic Plan 2024-2029 and our bold ambition to become Australia’s first need-blind residential college by 2035.

Your generosity brings us closer to a future where every deserving student can access a world class opportunity within our unique College community.

As an interstate student from Queensland, the prospect of moving to Melbourne and settling into a large community as an individual was daunting. Being able to call JCH home opened up a community of likeminded peers where I feel seen and accepted; the transition to university is big enough without factoring in navigating a brand new city, and being at JCH allowed me to focus on my passions without having concerns for loneliness, isolation, or any other anxieties that come with this period of transformation. JCH facilitated my ability to access university, and supported me to achieve my best academically, without neglecting the holistic aspects of a person’s experience that come with community and extra-curricular activities. I have loved getting involved with all the opportunities that JCH has provided me, ranging from sports, intercollegiate arts programs like the musical, the college play, photography, musical performances, and social media content creation/sharing
