John Swain led a life defined by both intellect and adventure. Trained as an aviation engineer, he later pursued a Master’s degree in English Literature at the University of York and completed a PhD on Australian poet Frederic Manning at the University of Glasgow, the first doctoral thesis devoted to Manning’s work. John also served as a Non-Residential Tutor in English Literature at Janet Clarke Hall in the late 1990s, where he was remembered for his thoughtful teaching and enthusiasm for literary discussion.

Beyond academia, John was an accomplished mountaineer and among the first Australians to climb the Matterhorn in the early 1970s. It was while mountaineering in Switzerland that he met Penelope, a talented climber from the United Kingdom. Their shared love of adventure, learning, and community formed the foundation of a lifelong partnership.

After settling in Melbourne, Penelope became Administrator of Melbourne Law School and later served on the Janet Clarke Hall College Council from 2002 to 2006. She was known for her warmth, practicality, and commitment to students and staff.

The scholarships created through their bequest will help gifted students pursue their ambitions, reflecting the values that shaped John and Penelope’s lives: courage, curiosity, generosity, and a belief in the transformative power of education.
